So, I pulled the trigger on a Sony A99 (full frame) and Tamron SP 300mm f2.8 AF LD IF a few days ago. This lens is quite rare to find - especially in Minolta AF mount - got it from KEH.

So this shot is with a Sigma 1.4X EX DG extender on the Tamron 300 and using 1.7X Clear Image Zoom for a total of 714mm wide open @f4, 1/500, ISO 1600 in deep shade from monopod.

I wanted to get to at least 700mm on full frame with good IQ - the f4 is a bonus too !

This is full frame, reduced here for viewing, with my standard PP in Elements 9.

Larry, great photo and a DDL shows that you have a weinning combo, Lens, 1.4 ex, and most important the person behind the camera.

Thanks Greg ! - I think it is meeting my expectations - now if I can just get the AF to work optimally on moving subjects ....

Excellent! Having now shot some animals and butterflies & insect with MF lenses adapted to Sony bodies, I've used two approaches for sharp results. (1) With the "focus" as sharp as the EVF view indicates and / or the "shimmer" highlights in the EVF, I lean slightly in and out while shooting in a burst. Between my own natural sway, the purposeful leaning, and the slight movement of the target, moving the plane of focus usually gives something with the "best" focus in the burst. I've also done (2) moving the focus on the lens slightly in and out over the point of focus, while shooting in a burst.

The moving the focus (2) tends to work better from the tripod where leaning in and out (1) is for handholding or from a monopod. Certainly you did a great job with this squirrel.
