I took the card out of my camera and put it in the memory card reader. Some photo came over but most were represent by a grey tile icon with and I with a circle. I took the card out of the reader and put the card back in my camera to see what photos were showing... Camera notice "cannot read card must format"????
I was able to view some of the pics on my computer but when I went back in nothing. Have I lost all photos?

Sounds like a card failure. Geeting more and more common with Sandisk cards. Try running a recovery program on it to get your images back, since some of the images can be read the card is still communicating, at least partially.
Then replace the card or risk total failure at some point down the road.
Go to the manufacturer of the card's website and see if they have a link to their / or their recommended recovery software.
Or Google "free sd card recovery software" - there are a few out there.
Good luck.

Your memory card is failing. Chuck it.

Will it cause any damage if I use compressed air in my camera's card slot?
I never take the SD cards out of the camera, this can cause the problem you have, it really is not necessary to ever take SD cards out.
Compressed air could drive any debris in deeper I would think or could work perfectly it's a crap shoot 😁

Surely, this is an "April Fools" comment (?)
The card reader may be at fault. There may be a poor connection with the card reader and the computer. The card should be able to recover the photos with good software from the card manufacturer. Then save the photos onto an external hard drive. Scrub the card erasing everything afterwards. Trash the card then. Don't format the card at any time. The error on the card remains. Good Luck!
Card contents can become corrupted without a card failure. Turning the camera off while it is still writing to the card, removing the card from the camera before writing is complete, problems "mounting" the card in the card reader, batteries weak, etc, etc.
Automatically telling anyone to automatically trash a card without more information or testing is ill-advised, since it does not identify and correct the problem, which may be behavioral and happen again.
To the OP...SanDisk includes a certificate in the package with their memory cards which allows for download and licensing of recovery software. Find that certificate and follow the instructions on it. If you don't still have the package, buy a new SanDisk card and use the certificate that comes with it. There is no additional cost for that software. It can recover your files in most cases.
Then I'd reformat that card and try it again, taking only unimportant pictures the first time or two.
Yes...cards wear out. But we much more frequently do something silly that causes them to mess up.
So if you are able to recover the data, and if the card teformats and works, review how you are using and handling it. Make sure you are following all the instructions in your manual.

Just for grins you could try cleaning the card contacts with rubbing alcohol (no abrasives) and then try reading it again, or try it again in the camera. If it is a recent purchase you might try a return or contact Sandisk. As MT Shooter stated - seems we are hearing of these fails with Sandisk a little more often, hopefully Sandisk will take notice and rectify the problem. At any rate I'd say you can no longer trust it for anything important, and complete failure may be coming.
Interesting...do you use a USB transfer cable or download wireless?

Not if you use a cable to connect the camera to the computer. There's no wear and tear on the door or the card.
