If you are trying to keep cost down I would recommend a D700. I bought one when l made the jump to FX and love it. They are not to had to find either.

I am another very happy user of D700, still a great camera.

Many professional photographers switched to APSC from 35mm sensors because of the crop factor and how it enhances those long wildlife shots. I use full frame lenses on my APSC size sensor camera upon occasion. I would not switch back to full frame because of the high resolution with today's sensors. If I want wide angle, I use my separate wide angle 10-22mm zoom lens. Plus, APS size lenses are lighter and less costly than full frame lenses.

But there are no long prime APS-C lenses.

True. And further, a APS-C camera uses the center part of FX prime lenses. And the center part of the lens is usually the sharpest part. Really cool stuff for APS-C camera's. Thank you Nikon for making excellent FX primes for us APS-C camera guys.

I bought 2 Nikon D700's on ebay, 2 years apart. They are very reliable and can be found on ebay with less than 30k clicks from $500-700. Shutter is rated for 150k clicks. They are FX 12.5 MP. They work with all my non D lenses for Nikon. I primarily use Tamron 28-300 bought in 35mm days. I am very happy with them and still learning all the adjustments. Wait for some good deals with extra stuff, like batteries and flash cards CFII included.
