My first "real" camera was a Pentax K1000 my mother bought me for my 18th birthday, As soon as I saw the ad for the Pentax Super Program I wanted it Imagine! a camera that could be switched between aperture priority and shutter priority auto exposure.

My first camera in the early sixties was a Minolta rangefinder. It had its issues and I went Konica that had decent lenses but also had issues. Then I bought a Nikon F and a Rollei and it has been Nikon ever since.
In the 80's I had a Bronica and a medium format Pentax that I used for weddings and both were sold when I went digital around 2002.

Just to do it, try it out, roll around and play with it.

Have to say I loved my Canon A1, and still have it somewhere.

I thought the Super Program was "way cool." Dialing in shutter speeds without a dial! Loved it. Did you ever get that camera? Was it as cool as I thought it would be?

On a lighter note, how are things going with the new D750? My daughter (also in the Pittsburgh area) has one and has made a nice business using it. She is Emily Novak Photography and she's in the Mars area, if you have questions about the camera and want a face-to-face.

I thought long and hard at one point about the Pentax 645. I liked the look better than the 6X7 which, to me, looked like a 35mm with a thyroid condition. But I must say, I have loved my Nikons from day one.

My first SLR was a Pentax S1a, and a light meter which sat on the top and coupled on to the shutter dial. This made it big and bulky, but it was a good camera. My favourite though was a range finder type Minolta Hi-Matic 7, which I seem to remember was the same model that Col. Glen took to the moon. I have now, years later, repeated the full circle, swapping Panny DSLR style for a retro style Panny GX7. (Used - with only 1000 actuations - £200). Cheap at half the price! and a fantastic camera!

Among some Nikon guys I have known, "them would be fightin' words." Are you still using your D750?

Within a year of buying my first ever camera (1980 - Nikon FM) I was a full-on photo fanatic. Friends saw this and asked me then, had I not bought the Nikon, what camera brand/model would I have rather bought.
We have a number of other "old-timers" here and I was wondering if any have pondered this question themselves. Back then, what 35mm format camera would you have bought if money was not an issue?

For me, at the time, I had a huge "crush" on three other cameras, curiously all with German ancestry. My choices were: Rollieflex SL35 E, Contax 167MT, and Leica R3 Safari.

Luckily for me, I didn't know anything about any of them at the time I bought the FM. All of those companies went out of the camera making business some time back. Thank-you, Nikon, for hanging in there.

Yashica 1976
Nikon FM in 1984
Nikon FE for my wife 1986
Nikon D5300 when it came out
Nikon D7200 2015
Nikon D500 2016 March for a Kruger Park S Africa trip in June.
Sony a6000 for my daughter who went on the Kruger trip with me.

Going to the Melbourne Florida air show with my D500 and 200-500mm lens today.

Tempted to get the Sony a7r3 but have an old Porsche 986 that I’m fixing up so putting off any camera pitches for now plus I love the D500.

I have one myself, along with my Nikons, and Fujis, and while I find it not the easiest camera, and not the first one I reach for, it does give me the best results for stills and portraits. You can never have to many cameras. I also have an older sigma DP-1x, which I do find myself grabbing when I just want to carry something in my pocket for the just in case moment.

For me, when Nikon stopped production of their Df model DSLR, I started putting money away to buy the (rumored) Df2. But I recently started wondering if I really needed 3 DSLRs for my shooting gear (can't imagine parting with my trusty Df). Then I figured that, since film cameras are in much less demand, maybe I could find the three that I used to like for not much money. I have. They are in good shape, excellent working order, and reside in a glass display in my home.

This point in itself should start another thread.
Two years ago, in March or April of 2017, I finally, gave in and bought my first digital camera ever (at least for me), since I already have bought Pentax digital for my daughter.
Throughout the decades my systems always been Pentax film cameras, with the exception of my very first camera (chinon CE-4s).

When I bought the camera I went with Nikon (D750), but actually want it the Df. Too much money. I didn't go with Pentax due to the less than acceptable (in comparison to the other brands) autofocus system, which always' been Pentax Achilles' weakness, plus the lack of modern up to date lenses released for the K1 at the time. Pentax is so slow to produce, that I knew that if I went with Pentax it would be years before I have the lenses that I wanted to have, so Nikon I went.

This brings me to the point: besides the price, at the time, the other thing that stopped me from buying the Df was the 16 mp. I wanted 24 mp. I still do, why? I keep asking myself why.

Now I have the money, and waited for last Xmas to arrive, thinking that Nikon would introduce a new Df version, but sadly, nothing. Production of the camera was stopped, and nothing has been announced so far. So, I will give Nikon till the end of 2019, if nothing, then, most probably I will get a Fuji X-T3. I just love cameras that have the configurations of a film camera. I hate the having to get into menus to do what I want to do.

When you are right, you're right. I was zoning-in on SLR/DSLR types. The SL Mirrorless system does look really cool. But for me, the R3 and R4 were the ones that pulled on my heart strings.
