I have had a powershot G12 for some time, and have gotten some great photos with it. However the shutter lag is an irritation. Can anyone tell me if some of the newer cameras like the sx720,730, or 740 have eliminated this problem?
Canon G series cameras are great cameras. As far as the shutter lag, you'll have to go to a camera store and ask a knowledgeable sales person, if your lucky enough to have a store in your area.

Here's a discussion about your problem.

I can't tell you about the G12 because I've never owned one, but I do have a G16 that takes very nice images, and I'm not experiencing any shutter lag with it. There are still a few of them around. I think they're available on Amazon.
I have the G12 and love the camera and the pictures but the shutter lag absolutely drove me crazy, especially trying to take pictures of active children. I bought a G7X to replace it and am amazed at the beautiful pictures, videos, and ease of use. The touch screen is very handy. The only negative is that there is no viewfinder and can be an issue in bright sunlight.
But to simply answer your question, yes, the G12 has shutter lag.
That's a surprise. I thought shutter lag was a thing of the past. All reviews should give specs for shutter lag.
Shutter lag is a thing of the past. The Canon G11 was released in 2009 and the G12 in 2011. I have no problem with my Canon G15.

I do like my G15 but there are times when I notice a lag, at least compared to either my T1i or T4i, Bob.

I got rid of it for the same reason
Yes, focusing is faster with newer cameras, so try them out.
I’m not familiar with the cameras you mentioned but my a6500 and RX100vi are much faster...
Good luck!
