I have 5 lens that cover my needs, two primes 50mm macro and 85mm, three zooms 17-35mm, 24-105mm and 70-300mm.

I "need" 2 of the 3 I have, all Canon - 50mm f1.8, and 55-250mm (kit 18-55mm I rarely use). But I want 20 more plus several more bodies. Of course I rarely do photos that need more reach. So for my wants, not gonna happen any time soon.

Lenses are expensive. Even the mid-level lenses are expensive. Lenses can approach or even exceed the price of the camera body--even just one lens. My A6300 came with the two standard kit lenses, the 16-50 and the 55-210. Neither is a top end lens, but both work well enough. However, the 16-50 is just a bit short for my uses, and the 55-210 is a bit long at the short end of the zoom range, and I rarely use it. So I picked up the Sony 18-135 which ranges it right in the middle. When I had my D7200, the lens I used 99% of the time was the 18-140. I rarely used the Sigma 70-200, and the Tokina 11-16 even less. So that's what works for me.

If you are looking for the best Sky King says it all. I also have the macro 105 and the 200-500. I do use them all and usually carry two bodies when traveling with whatever two lenses I'll need for the day.

This reference is to the 'Trinity' as explained above. Most pros own all three. That alone does NOT mean that you need all three, or even one of them. It's all according to what you want to shoot and how much you have to spend. As a working pro, I own the Trinity and 20, or so, more. I regularly use about 75% of them. I have a few used only for special occasions, like an 8mm fisheye as well as some duplicates like both a F4 and an F2.8 70-200. Sometimes lighter is just better when I don't need the speed of a 2.8. I am an amateur landscape, wanna be wildlife, and trying to train myself up into becoming a fine art, photographer.
I shoot with a 1.5 crop factor body, My lens "holy trinity" is 11-16 F2.8 zoom, 17-70 f2.8-4 zoom, 70-400 f3.5 to 5.6 zoom. This gives me unbroken coverage from 11 to 400 mm.
Of the trinity , I probably use the 17-70 85% of the time The 11-16 WA zoom a bit more than the 70-400 telephoto zoom. I also occasionally use a 30 mm f1.4 prime and a 50 mm f 2.8 1:1 macro

Bought this for my wife, and it's the only lense she needs and is very happy with it.
I'm kind of jealous.
Then again, I use my 10-20mm wide angle, 8-15mm fisheye, 150-600mm tele as much as my mid-range zoom lens (18-250mm)
