Pileated Woodpecker

Fred Harwood Loc: Sheffield, Mass.

New England spring arrives with woodpeckers announcing territory with loud cries and drumming. Females scout for dead spars to excavate for a nest, making a new cavity each year.

This pileated female, our largest woodpecker, paused for a microsecond to let me snap the photo, which shows even the woody bits still flying around her.

Best in download. Critiques always welcome and read.

D7000, ISO 320, f/8, 1/800, 300mm, handheld, midmorning.

You are correct, it's a male. I looked too quickly, and other photos show more of the red mustashe.
