Nikon Series E 100mm Manual Focus Lens

Does anyone have any experience with this lens? Is is any good? I have an opportunity to pick up one in new condition for $75. It would be used on my D200.

Thanks to all

seems to be a really cheap price--be sure that it really is a Nikon and not a knock off
and from a reputable store not a website

I think Nikon E lenses were the 'amateur' lens series from several years ago. Seems that my FG came with a 35-70 E, which would be considered a 'kit lens' now. It 'should' work, to some degree, on your 'new' digital Nikon camera. . . obviously manual focus, probably no auto exposure features, maybe even no auto f-stop either.

I think I'd put that money toward a less expensive, newer style lens that is fully compatible with your camera.

Thanks to all who replied. Yes, it really was a Nikon Series E 100mm lens. A gentlemen was advertising his late uncles old film camera and two series E lens, 50mm and 100mm. Lens functions on my D200 after setting the non-cpu lens settings and looks as if it had never been used. I decided to pass and look for a newer AF lens. Manual focus on this D200 without a split screen would in my opinion be a minus. Would definitely limit its use to stationary shots as I can not see manual focusing a moving object.

Even though the 100E was a very good performer (I've had one) I would rather have more modern functionality.

It will work on your camera with metering as well. I have one but don't use it much as I have the 105mm F2.5 as well. I use a multitude of older manual focus lenses on a D300 & D70s.The 100mm was one of the more popular Series E lenses that Nikon came out with. The 70-150 was Galen Rowell's favorite take along lens in the Series E line.I'd put many an older lens up to current lenses, especially considering what they cost saves you lots of money. The main advantage of current lenses lies not in their optical performance (in most cases) but in the fact that they employ newer lens coatings & exotic elements which reduce coma & aberrations ( both of which can be fixed to a degree in post). A big advantage of the older lenses is that they are "faster" & as such one is better able to effectively blur out distracting backgrounds...As for the price, that sounds about right. The popularity of the older lenses has increased by leaps & bounds over the last several years as more people realize that they are functional with most Nikon DSLR's (with some limitations on the base & prosumer models). I moderate a group on Flickr devoted to just this idea of using the older lenses on Nikon's DSLR's

Thanks to all who responded. Got the 100mm series E from a camera shop. It is a real Nikon and in like new condition to boot. The owner of the camera shop had been told Nikon series E lens were garbage so he sold it to me for $65. Works very well and I could not be happier. I like this lens so much I sold my Nikon 50mm 1.8D. I do not miss auto focus. I am using this lens on my Nikon D200 and it meters great once the data has been entered into the camera. I will say this 100mm series E lens is much better than my previous Nikon 50mm 1.8D was and it is made in Japan.
