We have access to thousands of movies at a moment's notice, and that can be very entertaining. Lately, I've been watching movies in the Horror and Thriller categories. I find them to be very amusing, although not intentionally so. Being able to FF through them is a benefit of streaming. I've noticed some similarities in these movies - aside from the total stupidity of the characters.

1. There must be an app used by writers that inserts "F**K" into every sentence spoken by every character. I don't know why this word has become so popular in films, but it seems to be essential for human communication.

2. Virtually every monster/ghost/alien/serial killer movie ends the same way. The beast is defeated, but in the last second or two, you see an eye open or a hand move. It's not a happy ending, after all. Why can't they make up their minds? Either the creature is defeated, or it isn't. It's gotten so that I now expect to see that hint of disaster in the closing frame.

3. Despite the fact that the characters are going on some kind of adventure - hunting monsters or aliens or serial killers - no one has a camera. They don't even bother to take pictures with their phones. Strange things are happening all around them, yet no one thinks to take a picture.

So, that's my rant for the day.

Good rant. But you forgot - You take that path and i’all take this one - the creepy noise/music to let you know the beastie is coming - and, of course, the woman runs, falls, does the backward crab crawl, feet slipping, yelling “No.” But, you’re a better man than I Gunga Din, at least you can watch them.

Wife and I have stopped watching newer movies mainly because of the language. Get tired of hearing the "F" word every few seconds.

I read a lot...so have a fine sense of imagination. I hate thriller movies they make me jump and I cannot relax. I end up anxious...much to the enjoyment of my wife.No matter the age of the movie or its genre - even the kids movies get me so 'engrossed'I start 'bouncing' at every climax.

I also agree that the amount of swearing adds nothing to the impact of the storyline. A good script stands out more than bad language.

Have fun with your movies

I was never a fan of horror movies, and it goes way back. When little, they used to run "The Wizard of Oz" on TV. The crows and monkeys scared me to death. Don't know why the Wicked Witch of the West didn't, but I'll leave the psychoanalysts to figure out that one. I've just never gotten over those, so I've avoided them.

I've never been bothered by the "guts 'n' gore", but it never really added a lot to the movies.

As I passed my 60th birthday, even the action movies started to lose their luster. I've since gotten more interested in movies with good scripts involving character development and dialogue.

Even in the 70's, I found a lot of the BBC imports on PBS much more entertaining than some domestic movies. "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy", a miniseries starring the late Sir Alec Guinness. The remake, starring Gary Oldman, while not as well developed, was a superb suspense movie (Although having read the book, I knew who the rat was.). Ditto "The King's Speech". It had superb dialogue, and the relationship of King George VI and Lionel Logue was well done.

My wife and I do have one movie in common. It's "The Green Mile". Tom Hanks, the late Michael Clarke Duncan, and their supporting cast, did a superb job on a spiritual story.

Nice rant, Jerry. Though I'm no prude I, too, am tired of hearing the "f" word in every other sentence.

Can't remember the last time me and Mrs. N. went to the Cinema. But following a talk by a professional at the photo club a few weeks back I've been looking at more the story in old black and white movies.

Yesterday I watched WHISKY GALORE (an old U.K. comedy) and marveled at the bright whites that retained surf detail and similarly the deep blacks that still detailed the weathered wrinkles on an old mans shadowed face.

I'm told that in days past the brain could be trained to see in black and white by the wearing of green tinted specs, anyone else heard of this.

I'm not a prude either, but the same thing applies to the stand-up comics nowadays. Can't talk without using the "F" word.
And they believe that it makes them seem intelligent.

The best comedians rarely use profanity. It's a crutch when they don't have the talent to say something funny. The older classic comedians relied on wit and timing. Sadly I can only think of a few today that don't insult my intelligence by inserting the F word. They've lowered the bar and dumbed down another field.

Our biggest selling comic, PETER KAY, (last time I looked he made as much as no's 2-9 added together) has never used the word to the best of my knowledge.

But I've never seen him live - unless it's a 'live' recorded presentation.

Jerry,
My wife & I watch at least 2 movies in the evening. Occasionally we find them on Netflix or Amazon Prime. Mostly we borrow them from our local library system. There is no limit for the number borrowed, loans are for 1 week but are renewable and I use their online system for searching and reserving. It's fantastic and free. Perhaps your system is not as convenient as mine, but it may be worth a look.

I have Amazon Prime as my only movie source, have been watching a lot of documentary films lately. They have a great selection.

The proliferation of the "F" word is also true of a lot of new writers. It apparently is supposed to substitute for talent. I buy books for my B&N nook and Amazon Kindle and can find a number of them for .99 or free. The lower price helps get readers for new books. Sometimes you get the first of a series free to entice you to buy the rest of them. Amazing how often the "F" word is used by new writers.

Tired of the F word also. Real people don't talk like that so why do they use it so much? It makes it uncomfortable to watch some great series, like The Sopranos and Shameless.
