Ok I picked 9 pics that I want critiqued HONESTLY!!! I will not get offended because this is the ONLY way I am gonna make myself better..Please be frank on how I could make these better..I have CS5, but am soooo amateur! I only really know how to color correct, but I always have trouble cropping and I don't know how to use the "eraser" tool. Any tips? I do have the "photoshop CS5 book, but sometimes find it difficult to understand. Any suggestions for websites to I can learn more?

Did you obtain authorization from them to post their photos online?

Hello everyone. My friend asked me to take a family portrait at a beach, and this is my very first shoot so I'm very exited, but also VERY nervous! Any suggestions? I own a Nikon D5100, so I know that I do have the beach option on there. I know I'm supposed to take the picture either early in morning or later in the afternoon. So depending on the person, I'll suggest around 4ish in the afternoon and maybe between 7 and 8 AM. Does this sound right to anyone? There will be 6 people total, so I'm wondering who would I focus on? Also the ISO setting should be around 200 maybe 400 max? One last thing I'm wondering if there are any programs out there where I could edit the pics? I do have photoshop (CS5), but it's not installed on my computer yet. (it's a new computer). Any other input on what I could do to make the pic better would be much appreciated.

I don't understand why you are not loading CS5. It is a great program.

You could have used a flash or reflector to eliminate the shadows on their faces.

Yes, a fill flash would have helped the shadows on the faces............the last one is cute, but no amount of "erasing" is going to help that (my opinion).....you could crop it down to a nice head/shoulder shot of the little girl....

Yes wasn't sure if I could crop it any better, but I figured I couldn't crop it any better because no matter what I did, I just couldn't get it right!

Just a verbal authorization is good right? I mean it's a friend, but for future notice, should I have this written down on paper?

I am away from home and on a short vacation, so I do not have a lot of time, but here is the quick review: NEVER let the sun hit parts of faces. Well...maybe not "never," but you need to be relatively experienced to do it and get it right. Here we have all those really bright highlights on one side and as is always the case with unmodified sun, very hard, harsh light.

The second to last image was positioned correctly - sun is behind far enough so it does not hit the face.

All you needed for that one (lighting wise) was some fill flash. A more advance method would use high speed sync to allow a shutter speed fast enough to darken the background and sky, but still get good flash exposure.

Due to the bright ambient, everyone is squinting. I will bet the sand was pretty bright.

The Eraser tool does not erase! Not in this fashion. You need to use the Clone Stamp to duplicate the pier pilings where the hand is.

Get a book on posing - families in particular. There are some "rules" that really work. One is that when positioning a couple, have the mouth of the higher one about on the level of the eyes of the lower one. Of course you can break that rule, but it really does make for a very well-proportioned image.

Most of the Dad with kids images are fine. They could be posed a little better, but I would bet dad will love them.

Be careful about shooting into dad's crotch.
