I have a large barrel with goldfish in it. I was wondering whatโ€™s the best way to shoot fish in a barrel. Telephoto, macro, flash, high Din, etc.

TNT will take all fish at one go. But as others have said, the most important item in your image train is the polarizer to cut reflective noise from the surface of the water. With that said, if you want really good pics....submerge the camera (properly attired or designed for such an environment of course). The attached is what you might expect with no polarizer...โ€ฆ.reflection images of clouds/sky.

3 sticks of dynamite will clear all the fish for 50 yards.

If you have a good arm, go to the middle of the lake and throw them in three directions, you can probably get that up to 65-70 yards!

But the OP was asking about a barrel. One M-80 ought to do the job. At which point we come back to the camera issue. It's a tough one. Do you want a high shutter speed to stop the motion of the fish as they fly out of the barrel or should you drag the shutter a bit to show motion? I think this calls for a two or possibly three camera setup!

Just in case anyone has not gotten this yet, a question about "shooting fish in a barrel" cannot be treated seriously. Except that it is much more fun to give it due consideration as a serious photography question than treat it as the joke it obviously is.

I would second the recommendation for the .22. Probably using .22 short. Shoot straight down into the barrel. That way the water (I'm assuming this is a barrel of water with fish in it) will slow the projectile so it will not damage the barrel.

If this is just a barrel of fish without any water in it, shooting straight down will pass the projectile through a lot of fish. That may slow it to the point where it will not damage the barrel, but either way, it will depend on the size of the barrel.

I would second the recommendation for the .22. Pro... (show quote)

Alternately, shooting a hole in the barrel may well produce the desired result of capturing the fish.

Sounds like a waste of a perfectly good barrel (although it might be fishy smelling). You could have captured the fish by tilting the barrel over a colander.
