If you're living in a 'historic' type of building, renovation/restoration can be quite a bit more expensive than a conventional building if you consider the type of remediation.

The structure is a bit shy of 200 years old and is in ruins. Our ancestors should have brought European building methods with them - the house would still be habitable.

Not just the methods, but, maybe a different level of skill of the tradesmen.
