CONCARNEAU boasts France's third most important fishing port, over 100,000 tons of tuna are caught each year by Concarneau-based boats. Its most popular attraction is the "ville close" (old stone fortified "town") on an island in the middle of the harbor with just a few narrow streets, a walk on the rampart surrounding the ville close provides views both into the old town as well as over the harbor.
LANDÉVENNEC has a modern presence in that the deep waters of the river Aulne facilitate a ship graveyard for civilian and particularly naval vessels. Its ancient presence is the Landévennec Benedictine Abbey founded in the late 5th century by Saint Winwaloe, attacked and burned by Vikings in 913 and subsequently rebuilt in stone.
