I hard wired my first 8088... about 30000 solder connections... never do that, it's not worth the learning experience. I had looseleaf binders full of timing and logic diagrams. After the first 1000 connections you can't give up... too much work expended, not realising how many were left. My only purchased machine was a 286 AST; it was a great machine, and I debated if I needed a 30meg or 40meg HDD... a different time period. My last 10 or 20 have been assembled from components.

I can relate, I went back to school in 1995 for Repair & Networking but they didn't have us soldering anything. They simply had us do replacement. I'm not sure they trusted us with anything other than a ESD strap :) Thanks for your reply.

safely overclocked processors. If you do want to get a new computer try Boxx. they know what they are doing with this.

Unless you're really into it... try to avoid overclocking. The extra speed comes with a price of possibly reduced component 'life time'. Only did that with one machine... and you can pick up an added 30% or so in processing speed... was using (and still do) liquid cooled CPU and GPU.

Amen! We "inherited" some older IBM PC's (80486's) from another division. This was an interim step to bridge older PC's which were Windows 3.xx platforms, until the entire building could be upgraded to new Dells, along with new servers, etc. We bought a bunch of Kingston "overdrive" processors, boosting the machine performance. We talked at length with Kingston's folks before we did this, and they advised us to only do this temporarily, and replace the fans with higher performing ones to help keep down heat failures.

The souped up processors managed to stumble to the finish line in 1997.

Got an 1TB SSD SanDisk USB storage device: amazing at how fast I can transfer photos from my Nikon D500 to this thing.

My first response to "How can I speed up my computer?" is, "Throw it out the window." Thirty-two feet per second per second (32ft/sec/sec) is certainly fast!

Only if it falls a good distance. Then there is aerodynamic drag that has to be factored in.

...and it probably has a terminal velocity of about 200 fps.

Thats great news! Every time people have better reception and speed on computers, makes me feel happy! Mine is very fast too and I can't be much happier for that! Its boring to sit down in front of ur computer and just wait and wait and wait. So thx for sharing this story and welcome to the new era!

A 1TB SSD can make a world of difference. Ditching the hard drive all together is a smart move. Now, if you install faster DDR4, that too will make more of a difference because you are not waiting for a HDD to find information on a disk.

I first heard about SSD's on this forum, a couple of years ago from JerryC41. They were a little more expensive at that time. I am now considering getting a 500gb SSD to replace my HHD on my Lenovo laptop. I was going to replace my laptop with a new Dell laptop in 2020. But, if I can renew my going on 7 years Lenovo, with a SSD, and possibly increase RAM. Then, I can save some money with the upgrade. Maybe get 2 or three more extended years out of it? Kingston, Crucial, and Samsung make SSD's. I wonder which is the best one? I would have a tech to install it for a labor charge.

As an early teenager, I used to help my dad install eavestrough... got used to 'old copper' irons at an early age.

My first SSD was a Crucial 500GB. It is still running four years later. I now also have four 1TB Samsung SSD's and two 4TB Samsung SSD's; they're performing well. The 1TB units have been in 24/7 operation for over a year to this point.

We're also running 4TB and 10TB Western Digital harddrives on the same platforms for normal data access and data backup. SSD's for the stuff you need rapid access to and HD's for all the other stuff.

I had my computer guy install an SSD because he said my HDD was the cause of my slow down of my computer. It was taking more than five minutes for my computer to boot up. He installed the HDD and now my computer boots up instantly. It takes 12 seconds for the first screen to come up and then as soon as I enter my passcode the computer boots up in less than one second!

I thought the answer would be more RAM. My computer guy really knows what he’s doing. He’s a guy in his 50s like me an old-school guy, an old timer who knows the old stuff and the new stuff. You wouldn’t believe how happy I am. Just wanted to share.

Download a free copy of CCleaner this will clear out a lot of junk also.

Don't give advice if you don't know what you are talking about. Windows 10 is set up for SSD. I build computers. Sounds like your the witch doctor. You have no idea the techs qualifications so instead of being a jerk, how about being supportive and give sound advice on topics you know about.

Good to know about the Crucial SSD's. I'll consider it. 500gb is all I need. But, I'll also check the price difference between the 500gb and the 1TB. Thanks.

I shopped for computers recently. A lot of models are now featuring a smallish ssd paired with a regular hard drive. The ssd holds the operating system files, so it starts up in a snap, and the regular drive is for saving files.
