Attached, please find a close up of a Transmission Gear and a specimen of Biotite Granite. I took these pictures with my Canon 80d and Canon 17-35 f2.8 zoom lens. I am interested in obtaining an even closer photo. Does anyone have any experience with Canon's 100mm f2.8 macro lens? I do plan to move to a full frame Canon body, down the road.

Excellent lens and the L version is even better.

I have the lens, probably my most used lens as I like to keep one camera set up for macro. I have it on my 7d a high percentage of the time. I also use it on my 5dii but I like the focus system on the 7d better, it is faster and seems to be more accurate. Maybe it is just me but my 7d has always been my favorite camera since I went to dslr which was about 12 years ago. When acquired the it and learn to use it focusing system it has been my stand by.

A good alternative would be either the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 or 180mm f/3.5. They're about half the cost of the Canon equivalent & very sharp.

I think that for your purpose you should do well with your present lens and a set of extension tubes. To get even closer, try reversing either your lens or nearly any decent 50mm or wider prime. Lens stacking is even a better option. http://extreme-macro.co.uk/coupled-reverse-lens/

Excellent lens. I use the 100mm macro on a 80D, 7D and a 5Dlll with results that satisfy my requirements. I also have the 50mm macro but enjoy Being further away from the subject. Only objection I have to the 100mm is it’s a very heavy lens but there are some advantages to that weight.

The Canon EF 100mm f2.8L macro is a very very good lens whether used as macro or telephoto. Currently available for $799 (B&H) and definitely worth the extra $200. It’s very sharp, focuses quickly and will always play well with Canon bodies. I have it and couldn’t be more pleased.

Thanks clicketv. The $799 is why I am taking my time to purchase. I've seen $685 at Best Buy, so will wait for next big sale.

I have the 100 2.8L and it's one of my favorite lenses. You should google the reviews. It's often called Canon's finest or one of the finest lenses. Since it also focuses to infinity, it is versatile as well.
