What all do you want to put in it?

Never had a problem with my ThinkTank streetwalker. I also use a Case Logic padded insert that slips into a Bagalini hobo that took a d7000 with a 16-85 lens and a 50mm. Now that I’ve converted to micro 4/3s, my Bagalini set up takes camera with lens attached and two other lenses. Peake design is also good. You may want to rethink how much gear you’re taking?

LowePro FastPack BP 250 AW II backpack. Had 7D MKII, 70-200mm f/2.8 and a 24-70 f/4, battery grip, extra batteries and extra CF/SD card holder. Fits in overhead, down know about under sit I never tried it. Purchased from B&H when on sale. Also had room in top compartment for a light jacket/sweater or sweatshirt hoodie. Plus easy to carry around, has a hand loop and backpack options. Check it out, you'll be glad you did.

I despise air travel. It has become a nickel and dime me to death money grab with all the add-on fees (like having to pay extra to get side-by-side seating with your traveling companion). The extortion of checked baggage fees have forced more people to resort to carry-on bags, which results in exhausted carry-on storage space, so more than likely you may have to release your bag for carriage with the checked baggage. I don’t want to let my best photo equipment out of my sight, so i have resorted to carrying a bridge camera when I travel. And on-board service is just abysmal.

I have insurance and though it would not be a convenient loss, my Pelican case serves me well and I don't dwell on it.

I took a trip to Alaska and flew on a few regional jets, and purchased the Think Tank Airport Commuter that was designed for this purpose. If the airplane had an overhead compartment, it fit, including the smaller ones.
Great bag, very high quality, durable. Not cheap, but I would buy it again in a heartbeat. Holds a bunch of equipment.

Was not real expensive and it has space for a laptop and tablet, and other non-camera gear.

I also use the Fastback 250. It travels well.

I’m preparing for a trip to the Bahamas. The last leg is on a puddle jumper where we’re limited to 44 lbs total luggage, including carryon item. It’s a good thing it’s a nudist trip. JK, but luckily my attire will be limited to shorts and quick-dry shirts. Still there’s no way I’m gonna take my Nikons and assorted lenses. It’ll just be my Lumix G85 with a 14-150 and 100-300 and my Fuji S1 Bridge for reach. Also a Fuji P&S waterproof camera for snorkeling. I’ll have one camera around my neck, the P&S in my pocket and the rest neoprene bags in a small backpack along with, chargers, batteries, etc. and my full face snorkel.

For a recent trip to MT, I purchased a Nikon Compact backpack. There was enough room for my D7200 w/ Ninon 16-80mm, Tamron 10-24 and Nikon 55-300mm, a Tablet, and camera batteries, and a wallet with polarizer filters. The charger went in my wife's carry on. I had no problem with this bag on the one flight that was regional.

I did put gaffer tape over the white Nikon Logo during the trip. No need to advertise.

We forget how much 911 changed things. I used to carry a camera backpack that wouldn't be allowed as carry-on today. The one time I thought I would have an issue was on a regional flight out of Chicago. They were were dropping large bags off the gangway to baggage handlers below. I said to the stewardess that I really didn't want to ... She stopped me and asked, cameras? She said they always put them in the crew's cabinet, all you have to do is ask. It was too heavy for her so I carried it forward to a locker just behind the cockpit. On the return trip I asked and again there was no issue.

Then again, maybe even today if you just ask ???

My Canon backpack fits. Williamsport has a small prop plane and the pack fits overhead or under the seat.
Holds a body 100-400mm, and 4 other lenses, flash and the needed accessories including batteries/charger manuals etc.

Perhaps if you could tell us what airline and the plane you were on, we might be able to give you some kind of constructive advice.

Obviously, you need to check all of the restrictions on each leg of a trip to determine your limits. I always do. Of course for many trips I limit what I take to what fits in my Tarmac 20" backpack. It will go under any seat.

Think Tank International V2.
I've traveled on several different models of RJ's and have never had to check this case.
I've fit my D5, 14-24, 28-300, an SB 910, and a Fuji XF100, and still had leftover space for misc. gear.
A great all around travel bag, saved my back and shoulders over the years, it's equipped with the dependable pro rollers. A must have piece of gear for shooters who are in and out of airplanes.
