Any one interested in attempting to photograph the MilkyWay in IL? I tried for the first time in Tucson two weeks ago in Arizona but the clouds did not cooperate.

The elephant in the room is that there are few good clear nights in the Great Lakes states, Michigan has about 59 clear nights a year, and there is no spot within 150 miles of Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland or Milwaukee where the ambient lights does not reduce the sky to about a magnitude 3 or 4 compared to a magnitude greater than 8 or 9 in much of Arizona.

That being said, there are dozens of local astronomy clubs in the great Lakes region where folks gather once or twice a month to discuss looking at and photographing the universe. You have never seen lens envy until you have seen a guy with a 20 inch f/5 reflector looking with envy at the guy with the 30 inch f/3.3 reflector.

This site will lead you to contact information on over 95% of astronomy clubs in the US:

Great Composition and Nice Photo. The Milky Way and Blocking Clouds is always an issue. May consider shooting the early morning before the New Moon, the early morning of the New Moon, and early morning after the New Moon. Between three days you might be able to get one Clear night and get a Nice Shot.

Worst case! Get some practice for the morning when the Sky does open up!

Look forward to seeing it all come together for you.

My wife said that I can wait as long as necessary so long as I don't buy another lens.

I was thinking about using a 35mm 1.4 or a 24-70 2.8. I should be able to find a good location either in or near northern Yellowstone.
