Mount Angeles No. 2

Taken from 10 miles northwesterly from the summit. It would have been nice if the horse was turned around, or on the right side, but can't have everything all the time.
FYC

Looks like there is a minor halo on right and left foothills to be taken care of.

What an all-encompassing shot. Wonderful moment! For me, its specialness lies in the shape harmonies of mountain and sky, and contrast between the fertile fields and the barren mountain.

I brought out the mountain and the sky by working on them in camera raw (clarity, increasing black). To add to the focus on the mountain, I cropped a bit, and burned the midtones of the trees far right in order to create a compositional triangle of horse, mountain, trees.

It has lots of good ingredients but the mountains need a bit of help to stand out. A bit of locally applied contrast and clarity should help, as would cropping in from both sides.

Very nice job, Bob. You've done a terrific job on the terrain, but I think you should have left the sky alone. You were trying to direct attention to the mountain, but for me the sky was the crown of the total. Thank you for work you did on this. I appreciate it.

Thanks, R.G. I think you and Bob were in agreement, and I concur. Generally I go for a more dramatic approach, but on this I held back for a more natural look, except for the sky which was pretty uniform white.

I see what you mean--and you are right. (Should not surprise me! 😊) I had directed focus on the mountain rather than your idea.

Thanks for the monotones James R. I considered that, but decided this one was better in color. So many ways to go and no one to be called "right" for all time. "Right" changes from moment to moment, mood to mood. I'm still working on this one with five iterations down.

Overall I like this. When I first opened it I was yanked to the mountain and sky.

After reading your rationale for the composition I kind of understand. As I have said before I have no artist's eye but as my eyes scanned down the photo suddenly here was this horse! competing with this wonderful landscape that contained all the elements I felt were necessary. When I look at it now my first focus is the horse.

Sorry . . . called the horse several times, but just couldn't get him to turn around!

Thank you for your comment, Curmudgeon. You went through the same viewing process I did coming around the bottom corner of the "S" curve and seeing the mountain. Turning around to park, seeing the horse and then the all-white sky developing during "PP".

Thanks, Weddingguy for doing what I tried to do but couldn't fill in the space the horse had vacated to my satisfaction. Nice work.

I love the clouds and I think some of the edits presented offer ideas on emphasizing the sky and the mountains. I also read and understand your comments on the subject. A very appealing photograph. It does not bother me that much, that the horse is looking out of the frame. Sure, it would be nice if he weren't but it is not a deal breaker.

Thanks for your comments, Erich. Four 8x10s and several partials I finally got an 11 x 13+ that I can't find one thing I would change. Another big Thank You to everyone who shared their thoughts with me.

Checking this image in UHH it is washed out in comparison with the print. Oh well...
