Hello, Looking at controlling the camera from laptop via a HDMI cable. A 3m. cable would be in most cases be long enough, a 5m. would be plenty long enough. Would there be appreciably more "loss" with the longer cable?
Many Thanks,
Mike.

HDMI Cable ????
Are you sure you are not talking about a USB Cable ??? HDMI is video - not suitable.
5 meters is the normal limit for a USB Cable.
You can go longer in some cases than 5 meters. ( I have )

To send video and audio HDMI longer then 75 feet and that may be to long, you need converter for CAT6 or fiber. You would need the tramscoder and devotee.

Something like this:

Is that possible? Or, is the HDMI connection output only? Check your manual before spending a lot of money or effort.

That would be an interesting idea. And HDMI is a bidirectional interface, just not for the video. Maybe someday will develop this capability...ssomeday.

I have a 50' USB cable I use, with the Control My Nikon app. The cable has inline components to reduce signal loss. I have not noticed any delay. I use it mostly when I've set up for night shots, and its cold outside. I can sit inside with my laptop. :-)

You can extend the 5 meter limit with a USB booster cable.

I think it's possible if camera manufacturers want to do it. The HDMI is mainly an output port but it can receive some data back too but at much slower rate.

I’ve tethered Canons to Macs and PCs with a 10’ USB extension on a 3’ USB camera cable. My former employer had over 400 systems like that in use from 2005 to 2012. So long as the cables and connectors were never stressed, they worked fine. (Be wary of Micro USB connectors in cameras!)

You may want to look here for a USB cable to meet your needs.

I am pretty sure HDMI will not do what you need it to do.
