I have an iMac and after processing images in Photoshop my .xmp file has always been recorded in "plain text". The files now appear empty and are called "side car". The data has been recorded but it is very convoluted to find. Can anyone one advise me how to reinstate the "plain text" version. This is specific to my iMac as it is not a problem on my MacBook Pro. I have uninstallled and reinstalled Photoshop to no avail.
Why do you want to see what is recorded in the .xmp file? I think its only purpose is to record changes made in ACR for RAW image files. Photoshop work is recorded inside JPEGs, PSDs, TIFFs, etc and I don't think XMPs can be forced into creation.

An xmp file is a structured (data) file that can be read by a browser. Try dragging it to the browser window like in Firefox and you will see the information in the file and can search it using the Cmd + F "Find" in your browser. In a text editor like Text Edit (Mac) or Notepad (Windows) the text will be all run together. Another advantage of opening it in a browser is that you cannot change it inadvertently like in a text editor.
Thanks for the response. My problem is that what where in the past the information was immediately visible now it is not.
Thanks for the response. I'll try your suggestion.

Right click on any .xmp file and then choose "Get Info"
About half way down the Info you'll see "Open with"
Click on that drop down tab and you can choose what app you want to use to view it in. Choosing TextEdit, or Pages, or Word will allow you to read it as plain text. I use TextEdit. Then Click on "Change All" so that all .xmp files will open that way.
Thank you so much for answering my question. I will try this.

I don't use a Mac, but in Windows this can often be the result of the default file association getting changed. That's the info that let's the operating system know what application to open when you click on a data file. i.e. click on a spreadsheet and it automatically opens Excel. Not sure where you would find this on a Mac.
Yes thank you, this seems to be what has happened.
