As many of you know, it is difficult to capture small passerines on the wing. Here are a few from this afternoon. Not the best shots, but some good action anyway.

The tracking with this body and lens combo is very good. It hung on to the mallard even as it passed throught the branches of the cottonwoods.

Even though the bird is not in flight, I love the lighting on the last one.

What camera/lens combo did you use? To me, the first and second are exceptional.

I captured these with the D500 and 80-400 AFS lens. The 80-400 is my go-to lens for birds in flight. The focusing is rapid, and the lock-on is very good as well. And you don't have to break the bank with the pricing. I have the 200-500, but the focusing is very slow and it is no where near as sharp as the 80-400. That being said, it is a less expensive lens. I try to capture a lot of wildlife in action moves. The 200-500 just doesn't make it unless you want to shoot in bright light and clear backgrounds. Herons and waterbirds would be good subjects for the 200-500 where the demands are not as high.
