So I went and looked at a P900 yesterday and played around with it in the store. The lens is amazing, although just using it inside the store didn't do t justice, but in the end, I decided against it. I finally decided on the Sony HX99, purely for the convenience of the small size. If my big hands and fingers are able to deal with the very small controls, then I'll keep it. If not, back to square one, I guess. I have 10 days to decide if I want to keep it. If not, I can make an exchange. Right now I'm just going through the menus and setting it up. The menus are pretty easy to use, fortunately. Will there be a chapter 2 here? I'll know in the next few days. I do apprediate all the great input, and if I return the Sony, I may reconsider the P900 and just deal with the size for traveling.

You will really like your choice. One thing to keep in mind is you can adjust the pop up viewfinder once it's popped up. Little lever on it focus's it to you eye. You also have to pull the top part back once it is in the up position. Very easy to use and great on bright days.
Pop up flash for beautiful fill flash outdoors on in.
I might suggest a pouch for your belt, I use the Nikon coolpix pouch, I had to train it using a rubber band on it for a few days until it stayed closed on it's own. Uses two magnets to hold the camera in. Works really great and your then hands free and you don't have anything hanging around your neck.

The B700 will do most of what the P900 will do, and it is lighter, less expensive, and shoots RAW. The photos I took with one, even at 1,440mm equivalent were very sharp.

I lugged my D7100 all around the UK for 20 days immediately upon arrival back home I purchased the B700. I wished that I would have had it my UK Trip it would have made it a lot my pleasant.

I'm wondering if anyone uses or used the Nikon P900 as a travel, and if so, what are your impressions? I'm trying to decide what to get for a travel camera and this one has come to my attention. I know it's pretty big for a travel camera, but then again, maybe no worse than a DSLR.

I myself use a SONY RX10-IV but my wife uses a NIKON P900.
We went to Switzerland last Sept. and are delighted with the pictures we both got.
Look into them both.

I have a Canon PowerShot SX50 that I take when I travel. I have used a Nikon P900 and a Nikon P1000 too ( borrowed). If I had the money, I would get a Nikon P1000. The Nikon P900 is a good camera but it doesn't shoot RAW but the Nikon P1000 does offer the option to shoot in RAW along with the 3000mm zoom capability.

A Canon PowerShot sx260, ( 20 times zoom) or a Canon PowerShot sx720 (40 times zoom) both fit in pocket but neither has a viewfinder. Would need sunshield and a handheld tripod for high zoom photos

Actually, Wing, as a result of Age (83+) and some physical problems I use nothing but Bridge and P & S Cameras. I have a P900 and my personal opinion is that you will not find its size nor weight prohibitive to a good outing. And I can promise you will LOVE the lens reach when you need it. rcarol is correct in that the FZ1000 is a marvelous camera. And right when they advise you need to decide if the difference between its 16x zoom lens and the P900's 83x Zoom is a deal breaker for a travel camera and the type of travel you do.

In any case, good luck with your choice and use your new camera in good health!

While the 83X of the P900 is very large, the Panasonic Lumix DC-FZ80 at $297.99 has a 60X and is a whole lot less $$$, can do 4k video and has a hot shoe.

From what I've read, the FZ80 seems to be a wel thought of camera. I have a friend who has one and really likes it.

Too many photographers today are zoom crazy. On most travel, for cities, museums, landscape, and seascape you will miss very few good shots with a 5:1 zoom lens such as 24-120mm (FX) or 16 -80mm (DX). The huge exception is wildlife, where long zooms and long primes rule.

I took the P900 to Singapore last year as my travel camera. I was happy with the results and found it to be absolutely perfect for my needs. As results speak for themselves, look at the Singapore Albums here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/organize/?start_tab=sets

I couldn't find the Singapore Albums there.

The finest "superzoom" travel camera is the Sony RX100M6. I fits in your pocket, has a 24-200 mm lens, and the 1" sensor can make 16x20's all day long. I've owned every one in this series, and this is by far the best. All it lacks is weatherproofing, but I've used these cameras in every weather and sea condition and its small size allows you to shield it from rain and spray.

From what I can tell, it's a great camera. It's unfortunate that it's so expensive.

Well, here's the final installment to this story. I bought the Sony HX99 and was pretty happy with it. Until I started playing around with it. While the size of the camera was fine, the controls and buttons are so small I was having trouble working them. Then I found out that it takes micro SD cards rather than the standard size card. I have large hands and fingers, making using this camera difficult, but I also had to have the end joint on my left index finger fused, ho thanks to arthritis, and that made trying to handle the micro SD cars extremely diffult. So I reluctantly made the decision to return it to the camera store where I got it, and exchanged it for a Panasonic Lumix ZS70. It's a bit larger and easier to handle and the controls are pretty easy to use. It also uses standard size memory cards. I haven't had any time to do anything other than register it with Panasonic, for the warranty. But it seems like a decent camera, high quality overall.

Thanks for the "end of story"! Well...., almost. After you take some pictures, please tell me more! Between my wife and I we have three Lumix cameras and have "recycled" a couple more. Besides the basics, we enjoy the automatic modes and some of the 4K photo tools. The Panasonic phone app is pretty good for remote control too.
