Let me begin with this:

I worked for nearly eight years in the pre-press department of a mid-sized print shop. My job was to get files into proper shape for our system. We rec'd files in every format you can imagine.

Hands down, the format that gave us the most trouble was MS Publisher. The program is extremely difficult to work with. I absolutely loathe MS Publisher.

I strongly advise that you get InDesign and learn to use it. it will allow all the flexibility you need and much more.

That said, if you can generate PDF's from MS Publisher, that's the way to go. Most Publish-on-demand houses freely accept pdfs.

As to where to publish your work, I highly recommend Blurb. They offer photo books, trade books and ebooks, soft or hard cover for those first two options. You can have a dust cover printed or you can take the route I use, which is image wrap. That's a hard cover book with your imaged cover printed directly on the cover.

Blurb does a fine job. Their product is excellent. They allow one to specify a profit, and Blurb has an on-line book store, wherein one can list one's book. They'll also connect you with Amazon and Imgraham for distribution purposes. They'll also create ebooks and set you up to sell on Apple's iBooks store.

Oh, and they offer volume discounts. Blurb can also set up large press runs - 100+.

Plus, Blurb has plug-ins for InDesign and Lightroom, which allws one to upload ID and LR files directly without having to first convery them to pdfs. But nif you do have a pdf, Blurb has a pdf upload function that will accept those files.

Give Blurb a look.You won't be sorry.

Recommend you look at "Scrivener" a application designed for writing long documents. It is relatively inexpensive (roughly $50.00) and is available for Windows and Mac (in the Mac Store!). By going to their web site (https://www.literatureandlatte.com) you can download it for a trial period; I believe for 30 days. Depending on how many features you want to use the learning curve may be quite high.

Good luck!
