Other than for professional photographers (those who earn their living through photography) how many lenses are really needed? On full frame camera is anything more than a 35mm or 50mm and a specialty lens, ie a telephoto, or macro, or something else depending on the focus of interest really needed? I know that lens manufacturers want us to think we do, but do we really?

Many!! Ha!

A prime for each focal length that you normally use. So, for me that would be 700.

How many shoes do you need? Depends on where you are walking, doesn't it?

I'm not asking what lens I should buy, I own a number of lenses. My question was more philosophical.

Indeed.

Good question.

Rephrased: What lens do you use most and why (purpose)?

This can assist new users in "prioritizing" their purchases. Some may never get into a specialty (e.g., macro), and others may expand to include it later. Some uses may overlap, leading to a common "best choice".

It keeps going back to that basic question: What are you going to photograph?

I like what you say about new owners prioritizing their purchases. My first SLR was am Olympus OM-1 that came with a 50mm f/1.2 lens. Learning with that 50mm also taught me what other lens I needed.

Interesting, I like the zoom as it lets me do various compositions in camera, as opposed to a fixed lens.

It's an individual thing.

As my old HS shop teacher used to say: “ the right tool in the right condition is half the job”. That’s my excuse, and I’m sticking with it 😺.

I'm not a "pro". . .I use a Nikon zoom that goes from 18 to 300
that is more than adequate for my needs. Zucco

As a semi-pro (I supplement my income with photography) I try to cover my range and reach with different lenses that will give me the best results possible. 24-70 f2.8L, 100 f2.8L IS Macro (an outstanding portrait lens), 70-200 f2.8L IS II, 100-400 f4.5-5.6 IS and I'm looking to add a wide angel 18-35mm or something similar.

Why do you ask a question such as this?

Because he wants to know. Are you too stupid to understand that?

Do I detect some jealousy here Mac? I would think if folks (Photographers) wish to own lots of lens it’s there business and why do you bring this up?
