At a franchise camera store in Sacramento a guy showed me a used omd em lmkll for $899 & a Pro 12-40mm lens for $450. Is it worth the risk? Thanks

Zario: Research the store using google and chrome. Also contact the Better Business Bureau. See whether they have had complaints. Also call the California Attorney General's office consumer frauds bureau. Are they offering a warranty? Are they offering a 30 day "no questions asked" return. Davidb

Thanks davidb- they offer a brief warranty & a return policy. On closer inspection there is a cosmetic surface scratch on the front of the lens that didn't seem to affect the image. Or would I be better off buying a new M5 with the kit lens for$999 ? Thanks

If it's Mike's Camera, my experience with them has been excellent. A number of other Hoggers from across the west seem to use their stores in other cities as well. Just my own experience, which includes no big ticket items, but the young people at the Sac store have seemed both helpful and knowledgeable every time we've been there. I thought the used gear we saw was fairly priced.

If you don't mind where do you get your big ticket items.

I live in New England, and only travel to NoCal once or twice a year. I shop at Mike's if I need anything while I'm there.

We're lucky to have a local shop - and most local shops can price match the Internet on new gear. I go in and talk with the owner and see if he can equal or come close to what reputable online sellers like B&H, KEH, Adorama, and Hunt's are selling things for. If he can, I buy locally, if not, generally one of those four.

I buy a lot of my gear used, so eBay is also a frequent choice.

All I can tell you is that if the camera and lens are in good shape the prices are very acceptable.

I wouldn’t go for a scratched Pro lens. Check prices for used at KEH, B&H for the camera.

Go to http://www.KEH.com and http://www.MPB.com and compare prices and warranties offered.

Go to eBay and look for SOLD prices on the same sort of gear, noting that most dealers offer no warranty on eBay sales.

Then go back and bargain...

For an additional USD 300 a Brand New Panasonic G9 can be purchased...and it is every bit the equal of the Olympus OMD EM II if not better....The Brand New G9 can be purchased for USD 1197...and may carry the standard warranty.

Thanks - I'll look at it. I'm not huge on video. I hear Panasonic excells in that area.

You may like to go through this comparison :https://mirrorlesscomparison.com/panasonic-vs-olympus/g9-vs-em1-mark-ii/

The Panasonic G9 is specifically targeted for Stills although it is quite capable at video.
