Happy Wednesday, all. My new Nikon D850 is awesome as expected. However, the NEF files will not download. I shoot in RAW + JPEG* and the jpgs load fine. At the end of the cycle I get a window saying the other files are corrupted. I suspect the problem lies with my old system: iMAC running OSX 10.9.5 I have 8 GB of memory, with just over half used. I import with iPhoto 9.5.1. I am hoping there is a solution other than putting more money into my computer system, although I would not be opposed to getting Lightroom if it wouldn't mean having to upgrade my operating system. Which brings me to another question; which version of Lightroom would even work with my vintage system and these ginormous files?

Have you checked that the D850 raw is supported in iPhoto? You are aware that iPhoto has been replaced with photos right? iPhoto is no longer supported.
The software that came with the camera can edit the raw files.
Apple products (iPhoto & photos) use the raw converter built into OSX, so I suspect you are correct - an OS upgrade to the current version would get you photos as well as updated raw conversion. Lightroom uses Adobe Camera Raw for the raw conversion instead of Apple raw conversion.
Your OS is quite a bit outdated, the current Lightroom version would be a problem, an older version might run, but would not support the D850 raw conversion. You may be able to use the Adobe DNG converter (free) to convert the D850 raws to DNG format, making them editable in iPhoto though.
I don’t use iPhoto to edit; only to download and store.

Well, why shoot in raw then if you are not editing? Sounds like you may do better just shooting in JPG and work on tweaking the in camera JPG settings to your liking, then pretty much any computer OS and software will handle reading and storing the JPG files.

1st, the latest update I can find for IPhoto is Oct 2013 The D850 was
announced July2017. they are not going to speak the same language.
2nd, As a photo viewer can IPhoto read and display raw files at all?

Have you checked your LR preferences to ensure that you have told the application to download both RAW and JPEG as separate files?

I DO edit RAW . . . in Photoshop.

I don't have LR . . . I download to iPhoto and edit in photoshop. (I have iPhoto set up to automatically go to PS to edit.)

Yes, I download and display RAW in iPhoto all the time from my D300s. I have iPhoto set to automatically open and edit in Photoshop when I hit the edit button.

I don't have LR; I just meant I was not opposed to getting it if I could find a version that was compatible with my OS and the D850, which apparently is going to be asking too much.

I'd guess then that it hasn't been updated to read the D850 nef files

Yes, it seems so . . . but I need a solution. The least expensive one, lol.

Photoshop and Lightroom CC - $10/mo - unarguably the best photo editing software suite on the planet. And NOT the most expensive. . . And it has no problem at all reading D850 files. Just sayin'

Do you know how I find out about compatibility with what I have?
