Recently purchased a grey card and a white card to set white balance on Canon 3Ti camera. Am a little confused on what exactly to do with it - is this a one time setup or is it required before every photo shoot. I'm sure you're all smiling...and I know I'm such a novice but I'd really appreciate your help.
Better yet, a walk through on exactly what I'm supposed to do would be even better - thanks in advance. Valerie

I can't give you a walk through as I'm not familiar with your camera but I can tell you that it is not a one time thing, ideally if you plan on using your custom set white balance, it is best to reset it each time the shooting light changes by a significant amount. Actually some cameras provide fairly accurate colors by using the presets like cloudy, shade, sunlight, fluorescent, incandescent, etc. but when you custom set your white balance with the current lighting, your colors in your photos turn out really well in my experience! Check your manual to see if it gives you a rundown on how to set your white balance, it is easy to do and is usually in one of your "menu's!".

Don't know anything about Canon as I use Nikon. That said, what I have learned to do is to set my white balance using the Kelvin. I then shoot something as close to pure red as I can fiond; on occasionm I carry a red card (the tail light of an auto works real good). If the color of my image looks like the object then I've set the white balance to fit the ambient light. If you are shooting RAW then it is something you will adjust in PP
On the " white balance " for the T3i....go to MENU...Second what looks like a camera with 2 dots(upper right corner)....scroll down to "custom white balance"... "click" ,use Set button on camera, ...put camera in MANUAL focus ...point camera/lens to white/grey card and take picture of card.....when you take the picture of the card press SET . RETURN screen that shows your Aperature settings ISO settings and AWB Setting.....look at the back of the camera and find the WB designation ..."click" that and you will come to a string of designations ...example sun, clouds light etc.....scroll to the last one which designates WHITE BALANCE press " SET" and there you have it. Remember you have to reset this white balance if the light changes in the area or areas where you ate shooting.
Oh by the way you can use the "WB" shift/ Bkt in the menu to compensate for a shift in color......see manual...adjusting the color tone for light source page 119
Thank you so much for the advice - I'll do that today. I read every day and appreciate everyone's help.
I failed to tell you ,you have to fill the viewer with the white/grey card for custom white balance to work!
Good luck....it works....experiment with the bracketing part....you will see the difference

AWB unless your going to shoot for a magazine. Canon has good working AWB.
Thank you - I'll check it out.
I shoot Nikon and need to do a custom white balance (use the white card) every time the lighting changes.

I only pressed "send" once but it showed up twice. sorry--hell, why should I be sorry? it's not my fault!
