Butterfly weed -
Asclepias tuberosa - is a milkweed species, one of about 200 milkweed species in the world, close to 80 of them occurring in the US. It is fairly common all over the eastern half of the US. It is as widespread, if not as common, as Swamp milkweed and Common milkweed.
The BONAP (the Biota of North America Program) maps showing where the different milkweed species can be found are here:
http://bonap.net/NAPA/TaxonMaps/Genus/County/AsclepiasWe have had good success getting these seeds to germinate, but then getting the seedlings thorough that first year is another story. They don't compete well, and don't handle transplanting well, either.
