I spent 3 months there with Riv Div 543 based out of a marine compound just up river with the Navy PBRs. The city floods regularly but is beautiful. In 1969 it was a Viet Cong hot bed. We were abused on one night patrol and lost a Gunner Sargent from the Marine compound who went out on patrol with us one night because he thought the (Squids) were joy riding on the rivers at night. We also lost our front gunner. No joy rides on the rivers in Viet Nam at night. The marines would not feed us because our hair was longer than theirs so we slept on our boats outside the compound at night and ate WWII c- rations. After that night ambush they had a more nuanced opinion of the Squids that ran the rivers at night.

I went back in 2007 and appreciated the village but will never forget that evening on patrol. Glad that Viet Nam is doing better. Too bad we messed them up for so long.

Just wondering if you made it to Vung Tau while there. My husband was stationed there and always spoke of how beautiful it was.

My wife and I also were on a cruise (Hong Kong to Singapore) in January, stopping in Ha Long Bay, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang. We made it to the beach formerly known as China Beach (now known, I believe, as Marble Mountain Beach). It was also interesting to note that our tour guide in Ho Chi Minh City believed (and said that many/most of the residents believe) that that name is probably temporary, and eventually the city will revert to the name Saigon. (Of course, she may have been saying that because about half the people on the tour were Americans.)

Our ship spent a day in Da Nang and we decide to visit a town about 15 miles south first then a run through the City of Da Nang and the beaches (China Beach).

Just south of Da Nang, is the seaside trading village and World Heritage Site of Hoi An. The city's historic district is recognized as an exceptionally well-preserved example of a Southeast Asian trading port dating from the 15th to the 19th century. In the 18th century, Hoi An was considered by Chinese and Japanese merchants to be the best destination for trading in all of Southeast Asia, even Asia. The Japanese Bridge, connecting the Japanese settlement with the Chinese settlement was constructed in the 1590's and is now emblematic of the city. Obviously Hoi An was not really impacted or damaged by the war. As with all ports we visited in Vietnam, the locals were friendly, respectful, engaging, especially toward Americans. Now as a exceptional tourist site, the crowds are coming and they were there.

Some photos to show the flavor of this beautiful old town. Each photo's heading generally describes it.

Interesting photos of Vietnam. The streets are so clean, or was it just that day?
The Vietnamese people like plenty of color in the streets and buildings.
I haven't traveled to Asia and prefer to see the country in photos.
Stunning photos.

Saigon was interesting, wide boulevards, fairly clean streets, more like business as usual, not war.1968. Beautiful buildings from French influence. Should be a show piece by now. Can't really enjoy the photos because the smells can't be experienced.
