With a Native guide, you can travel to areas in Monument Valley that aren't open to the self-drive or regular public tours. One of the added sights is The Big Hogan (hogan is Navajo for home). It is a massive, band-shell like structure in the red DeChelly sandstone. We were told to walk in looking straight ahead, close our eyes and turn around and lean against the back wall which slopes at 20 -30 degrees from vertical. Then look toward the ceiling to open our eyes. The huge Eagle's Head (also called Eye of the Sun) is the ceiling or most of it. Shown in photo #1. Our guide had a drum and another guide came with an Indian flute, and together filled The Big Hogan with Indian music. A very special memory. I've included the second photo only to show the scale of The Big Hogan. Both were photographed in film and it's a relatively low-resolution transfer to digital. It doesn't really matter for the first photo due to its simplicity. I suggest downloading the first photo.
