Got up early to spend some time in a nearby metro-park with the idea of practicing my BIF techniques. I was in the right place at the right time. In Southeast Michigan the ice is beginning to break up which means that some day soon some ice-fisherman will look around and suddenly realize the ice he is on is no longer attached to the shore. That is when the Coast Guard will get a call out. They have to practice also and today they chose the lake I was standing by. Two helicopters circled over my head three times and lowered a crewman to the ice. He used an auger to check the ice thickness then they made a practice pickup. They were from Selfridge Air National Guard Base, about ten miles from here. S.A.N.G. has the rare distinction (if I remember correctly) of being the only military base having all five military branches stationed there as well as a Border Patrol unit. Canada is just across the river. Notice in 3 & 4 the second helicopter standing by, either to observe & rate or maybe "just in case".
Great captures. Those guys are the best! They risk their lives and sometimes they lose...God bless them!
I think your last capture was the best. Great timing!
Great captures. Love seeing this as it gives these men great practice for when the real things happens. Mahalo for sharing.
