If any of you have this or a previous model your experience with and opinion will be greatly appreciated.

I purchased the G2 just a year ago and I have been thrilled with it. Right now I have it permanently mounted on my D7000 (need to upgrade) and I have the Tamron 18-400 on one of my D7100s. Last year I hauled the D7000/G2 combination to Yellowstone and at Pilgrims Creek, I was able to get a bunch of shots of famous mama grizzly #399 together with her two cubs. I was able to shoot from a safe distance, unlike one guy who photographed mama as she chased one of her cubs between his car and the next one as cub and mama crossed the road. I guess that's why the park service had an ambulance parked there--just in case. Anyway, I digress. I love the lens. Good luck and good shooting with yours--and stay a safe distance away from those grizzlies.

I did not. I have the tap-in (came with my purchase) and downloaded the app but have not used it. I like my results and don't yet feel the need to tune the lens. And as another poster noted, the whole tuning process does not seem intuitive, at least not to me.

I agree again; what I have seen from youtube and other posts is that you need to take several shots at a host of different distances and record the negative or positive numbers according to front or back focus and input those numbers in TAP-in.

Thank you for your reply and the great comparative photos.
I live only 1 mile from Sammy's Camera here in Santa Barbara and have already been there and now have the Tamron G2 lens.
Of course the Canon lens is a little sharper, but to my eyes not $750.00 sharper. Point of diminishing returns applied.
Now I need to decide on a very sturdy monopod at a fair price.
Any suggestions based on your experience will be very much appreciated.

Today I make my own monopods that adjust from the TOP. But here is a commercially made one that I like - https://www.ebay.com/itm/Leofoto-MP-326C-profession-Carbon-fiber-Monopod/173679312854?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l9372

Why? - because it goes short and short is important - 16 1/2 inches - so it can be used sitting down, as a carpod, or as a bodypod. Goes 62 inches tall, 32mm top section, 6 sections.

The raging debate continues to be the Tamron 150x600 G2 or the Nikon 200x500. You probably can't really go wrong with either lens. I own the G2 and like it. However, I agree with a previous post about the need for good light for this lens to really shine (no pun intended). The Nikon might be better in this regard but that extra 100mm on the Tamron is really nice to have. Click on my UHH handle if you are interested in seeing what I've been able to capture with the Tamron G2. I've posted a number of sets of birds using that lens coupled with a Nikon D500.

I just looked over your work. Very nice. I use the same lens and have also had good results.

I purchased the G2 about 4 months ago and use it on my Nikon D810 It is a bit heavy to carry around but have had some very good photos which have been handheld. The lens is quick to focus and is sharp throughout the range of the lens. I have to admit that I have not used it at its full length (600mm). The closest Is have come so far is about 500mm. The lens is very reasonably priced.

I bought the G2 about 2 months ago to extend the reach on my Nikon D810 (replacing the Nikkor 80-400). I spent 2 days recalibrating this lens with the tap-in. Used mainly at airshows, the AF is as fast or faster than the 80-400. Tack sharp, even at 600mm. 60% of my shots are hand-held, 40% with the Nest gimbal head on Benro Mach 3 tripod. Very satisfied.

No, it has calibration points at 6 focal lengths with 3 distances at each point for a total of 18 potential adjustments.

Even though it has calibration points at 6 focal lengths with 3 distances, it interpolates all the focal lengths & distances in between. I.e. if your G2 + camera body combination it is back focused -3 at 150mm focal length and -5 at 300 and, say -8 at 600 (just making up numbers), it will interpolate (estimate using a curve fit) for every focal length in between - i.e. at 187mm it will be a value between -3 & -5, at 240mm a different value, at 546mm another, etc

It doesn't use the value of -3 at 150mm, then from 151mm to 299mm go to 0, then at 300mm use -5, etc.

I would be silly to think that - or it shows a real lack of understanding of how the Tamron Tap-In tuning works.

I never said that. Of course it creates a curve, but the curve will be more accurate the more points you have. If you just use the Nikon fine tuning it only uses one number and averages.

I guess I'm just an idiot because I have the TAP-in and can't figure out how to use the thing. I went on-line and followed the directions but when you get to the part where you tune the lens I have no way of knowing what numbers to put where and why. So, I'm open to any suggestions. I downloaded all updates but outside of that, I couldn't figure it out.

If your camera has the AF fine tuning feature you can use it to find the values for each of the 18 boxes by trial and error. Do one distance at a time checking the accuracy of each of the 6 focal lengths listed. The 7.2 feet numbers are easy if you use one of these targets. Write down each of the 6 values then attach the tap-in to the lens open the program and change the values and save them to the lens. Repeat this process at 7.2ft till the lens focuses accurately at each of the 6 focal lengths with the camera af fine tune at 0. Then move on to the next distance, you can make a bigger target or just use live view focus to get a reference image and match it using AF fine tune to get numbers for the 6 focal length at that distance. I hope that makes sense.

my g2 was way off. tuned it pretty good myself but couldn't quite get it focusing accurate at infinity so I sent it in to tampon and it still needed adjustment even at 7.2, which was already perfect since it's the easiest to calibrate. if the 500 pf was available I would have bought that, in fact I'm considering selling mine and getting the pf. here's a shot at 650mm with the 1.4x on the g2 hand held.
