Hello everyone.

I was told, and it seems to be true, that the 18-55mm lens that comes with the T3i is not adequate for pictures with distant backgrounds. I am planning on purchasing the Canon T7i and wonder if the Canon lens that comes with it is better than the one for the T3i. I am thinking of getting a Tamron 70-300mm lens as well. I am sure that one is better over all. But of course is a telephoto.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Instead of the T7i I got the 77D. I'm thrilled. I also have t3i and sxi.
Check price and the 77D has newest processor

You are going to purchase a new camera and at least two lenses; are you sure you want to buy into old technology - the Canon T series may be dead after the T8i- Canon is trying to move us into the full frame mirrorless with the Canon RP. Yes, it is an extra $500, but you put yourself on a path that winds into the future not a path where you can see the end of the trail from here.

If you are intent on the T7i (You will love it) you may want to wait one more month. Once the T8i becomes a real camera, the T7i will drop in price - typically $100

Thanks, I may have to wait on the T8 or the 77 as another person suggested. I will get it eventually though. At least the T7i has 24 megapixels where my T3i only has 18. Not that that is a really super important matter, but it still helps me want to upgrade. My really big concern though is, how good is the lens. If there is a mountain with a forest in the background, how well will the detail in that forest show up? Hopefully better than the T3i.

Anyway, thanks

Surely that is a lens issue more than a camera issue. The T3i is still a good camera although my upgrade choice was the 80D, refurbished at a very good price (still have the T3i). These are interchangeable lens cameras, you can swap the lenses in and out. Mostly I have been upgrading my lenses which has worked for me. Everybody is different in their way of approaching these things, I personally look at the system level, the body is just a part of the system. A better lens works equally well on a T3i, 77D, or 80D or whatever comes next. I even use some old FD lenses on my EOS cameras, although that's not an easy thing to do maintaining the original lens IQ.

These choices are a little harder than choosing your next smart phone.

That is very interesting, because I seriously considered an 80D but just did not want to pay the price. The outer size of the lens is much bigger though than on a t?i. 67 mm compared to 58 I think it is. but if the inner size is the same, I should have just opted for the lens that comes with the 80D. Eventually, I will be getting that lens anyway, or the entire 80D package. I will have to check things out further.

Both the T7i and the 77D are very good crop sensor cameras. I have a 77D and love it. Canon does have a more recent version of the 18-55mm kit lens.(The 18-55mm is 4-5.6 STM) However, I have the the Canon 18-135mm USM lens, and use it as my general "walk-around" lens. It is fast focusing, and produces great images. If you want a little more reach than the 18-55, this could be an option. For a lens with longer reach, the Canon 70-300mm USM II lens is highly rated, has great reviews from UHH members who own it, and is on my list for future purchase.

Personally, I'd skip the T7i and get the 77D. You can get a 77D body on Amazon right now for $699. Use the extra money to get a better lens. Your 18-55mm lens is adequate for the average landscape shot, but if you're wanting to get closer, I'd recommend the 70-300mm IS II USM. It has super fast focusing, and will yield pretty sharp pictures.

The comparison between the T7i and 77D show they are very similar. The 80d has slightly better specs overall, but will cost you more, of course. One item to note: The T7i and 77D actually have a newer processor than the 80D, so they'll likely give a bit better images in low light.

Here's the side-by-side comparison of the T3i (shown as a 600D), T7i, 77D, and 80D:

Here is a link reviewing the newer18-55 STM lens and which also provides a link to the one it replaced.

Also, do not hesitate to consider buying refurbished from Canon. Everything has been reconditioned to like new status and comes with a 1-year warranty. Here is a link to the refurb cameras.

I upgraded my T3i to the 77D and love it. I also invested in a Tamron 18-400 for my trip out West and Alaskan cruise. I like the fact that I don’t have to switch lens very often. For me, it’s a great combo. I especially like how easy it is to change the settings on the 77D.

Speaking from experience, you really don’t want to buy into expiring technology. In not too long you’ll feel regret and wish you’d stepped up in the first place. You might consider renting the better model before you make your final decision.

AND, in a year or so what you are recommending as current technology is also "expiring technology" to use your term. Just buy what one can afford and what represents a significant upgrade.

I upgraded from a T2i to the 80D. It is better weather sealed than the 77D and is better in other ways. I can use the same lenses on each as they are both APS-C cameras with the EF type lens mount. My "all around" lens is the Sigma 18-300mm, noticeably less expensive then the Tamron 18-400.
