Having received my D7200, I see that I can change how each jpeg file name. My D5300 only records each pic with a designation of DSC.... jpeg. Is there a way to change the DSC file name. I have changed the folder name BUT not the file name. Any help out there???

Try menu/shooting menu/file naming. My D5600 manual gives an incorrect page number for a description.

What do you want to change it to?

I change all of my filenames on import to the computer using a custom template in Lightroom. Since I use multiple cameras, I like to put the camera name and serial number in the name as well.

If you haven't already done this, you can download the free application View NXi from Nikon. It will allow you to change names on import as well

Thanks Gene51
I do not use any adobe product. I will look into your link as a solution. Like I stated my D7200 allows me to change file names.

Yes this link speaks to "some dslr's" can name a new file name. My D7200 will do this but as I mentioned my D5300 does NOT allow this. Still looking.

If your Nikon D5300 won't let you rename them in the camera you can download "FastStone Image Viewer", which is free, and use the batch rename feature when you transfer the images from the camera to your computer.

I had FastStone from 3 yrs ago, so I upgraded tonight. I also downloaded FastStone resizer/renamer. I am so appreciative for the info. I think I will be able to use this the way I want. Thanks so much jamesl Great HHH support AGAIN!

Jamesl, I used the FastStone Resizer batch renamer process today. EASY_PEZZY!! Loaded up a sample of DSC_00001 and made up a new file name and my number designation. Clicked rename and done in a number sequence of the ten pics that I loaded. Thanks AGAIN!

I'm glad it worked well for you. I have been using this method for several years now on a regular basis.
