I prefer the first image ....as it is less more open in the sky than the second version.
I like #1, too, for the spaciousness. Somehow the fishing rod seems to distract in the second one.

I prefer #1, even though there is some empty space in the sky which does not add to that version of the photo, because the fisherman is larger in #1, and he is the subject. #2 makes him smaller in that version, and to me it is not as appealing of an image.
Thanks for your thoughts on the images Vince, appreciate it.
#1 for me, also. I like the balance of sky and sand better.

Thanks for taking a look Eurobird. The fish is some sort of bait fish, not sure which. It could even be an artificial. I believe he was fishing for bluefish.

Critique? Next time, consider waiting for fisherman to take another 2 to 4 steps forward, putting him in about one third of the image.

You are quite right Jay Pat. Sometimes I lack patience! Thanks for commenting.

I've always used mullet/cut mullet for blues.
I immediately liked #2 by far. Then, reading comments, couldn't understand why so many liked #1. Then someone mentioned the space above the rod, and then I understood. Until I noticed that, I liked #2, now It's number 1. If it were up to me, I would cut out the clouds and past them in higher in the photo, which would then be #3 as my favorite:-)
Looks like Number 1 to me

#1, Full story in photo - Full sky, sea, beach and alone fisherman.
#2 And I would also do massive cropping from the right and the bottom.

I like the first one. It gives you more working space for matt or frame or canvas wrap to frame the scene. The left side then limits.
I had a tutorial play on Amazon Fire TV in which the instructor said that you need a small allowance to be at the bottom below the subject and twice that allowance of space above the subject's head/top. based on that advice, you might try cropping No 1 from the bottom until the space below his feet is half the distance above his head. See if the instructor's advice works for you.
ALSO
The subject seems (at least to me) crammed up against the left edge. Is there more photo there in the original so he can have a little breathing room?
