I remember the cab-forward mallets from my childhood days. They came through my area just east of Los Angeles. The tracks went from dual track to single track and the east bound trains had to stop and wait for clearance before proceeding. I could hear the air compressors in the distance and would hop on my bike and go see them. Sometimes, the engineer would let me climb up in the cab for a look (even though they weren't supposed to). Those were awesome locomotives! I have had a love of trains ever since, even getting into model railroading for a while.
