WELCOME TO THE UGLY HEDGE HOG! I don't know why its called that. Probably because someone took CUTE HEDGE HOG, I'm just guessing. I am a Canon Kid who loves his 5D Mark IV. The Nikon D3x seems bulky. Do you have any problems with it. How about a Scuba Case for it. Was that hard to come by? I went Scuba Diving once and loved it. It is definitely on my to do list. I'm still reluctant go bring my "baby" underwater. Do you have any advice for a newbie like me?

I used to shoot with a Nikon D700 in a Subal housing. One day I saw a D3x with a Subal housing, strobes and extra ports on Ebay for $4300. Together it retails for around $20,000. I told Merry that someone was missing out on a great deal. It didn't sell. It was relisted a month later and I pulled the trigger.

I sold the strobes, ports and small extras that I didn't need for around $1500, bring my out of pocket cost to $2800. It's been a great camera and housing. When I win the Lottery I plan to get the D5 or whatever the top of the line camera is by then. Until that happens, I'm making the best with what I have.

Shooting underwater is surprisingly hard and easy at the same time. Lighting is completely different, unless you are shooting in a dust storm topside. Backscatter ruins more photos than anything.
Ikelite makes fairly affordable housings for most cameras. Strobes and ports for your lenses add more expense. Once you have it all figured out, a new camera or lens is released, tugging at your wallet.

It's also difficult to shoot when the water is moving, your subject is moving and you are moving. That's why I like nudibranchs. They move slow enough to eliminate one factor.

I generally find a subject that is in a position to give a bokeh background or allows me to shoot upwards with a water background. I'll use a low f stop to get a blackground, making the subject pop out. Sometimes it's as easy as a point and shoot, but not often.
