I don't know just what progressive addition is.
If you think about it, it's not just multiplication: addition also requires memorization.
Unless by progressive addition you mean just adding 1 as many times as you have to in order to add the total number you want added.
Long addition.

I myself am too old to change, but I think the Idea is to have students look at problems in a way that will make it easier and more logical when working with algebraic and higher functions. Math tables still need memorization and any mental math you can muster is a big help. Too many folks look at math as just an exercise with dry numbers following prescribed operations rather than viewing math as our attempt to define distinct relationships which we are looking for in the first pace as opposed to a mumble jumble of numbers.

Remarkable what the students will be able to do by the end of grades 2 and 3. But there IS memory involved!!! By the end of grade 4 they might be able to remember their name and/or tie their shoelaces!

Why to go back ? I got the result before the lady of the coffee using nothing but my brain.
It is a crime to teach children that way, IMHO.

That’s a do-it-in-your-head question--no pencil or whiteboard needed.
As for the video, I’m with the coffee guy.

How'bout the merchant's math: 35x12 is the same as 12x35
10x35=350
2x35= 70
Total - 420. Done! It can easily be done in head...

That is what I did. Experience comes with life.

No wonder as a country our education in math is ranked so low! Talk about taking simple and making it hard! Not to mention wasting time
Certainly hope she is not really teaching our youth!

How about transitive progressive addition? (my granddaughter just "asks" her cellphone for all answers).

And I used to show my students how to multiply or divide by 10, 100 etc by just moving the decimal point. Some of them didn't believe it would work and asked their math teachers. One young math teacher stopped me in the cafeteria and said she had never heard of doing it that way. ??????

You're scaring me!

I'm sure that her cellphone will give her an answer. But how does she know that the answer she gets will be correct?
(Same comment applies to a calculator, but the cellphone has a lot more leeway to be influenced by others).

I calculated that answer "In-my-head" in exactly 3 seconds
e.g. 35X10=350
35X2 = 70
350 + 70 = 420!!
