I am thinking of going to external HDD for backup instead of using cloud backup. What software do you all recomend for external backup. I know a lot of the external drives come with backup programs, but are there better options than the distributed backup sftware?

My requirements for external drive backups are very very basic (I just backup photos and Lightroom files to them). I have been using FreeFileSync (free obviously) where I have some tasks stored that will copy all the wanted files when run.
I am happy with it.

After a variety of difficult installations, stalls, and crashes using the drive makers' software, I have finally just gone back to the Win 7 backup software, which is still used in Win 10. You have to search among the backup settings to find it, but it's very reliable and reasonably fast. I alternate between two external drives, with one kept at the office and one at home.

I use both the "system image" backup and the individual file backups on both, and back up images and important documents to thumb drives as well.

I have heard excellent reviews for ACRIS, which I will probably incorporate as soon as I have the time to learn it.

After a variety of difficult installations, stalls... (show quote)

Andy, could it be you meant ACRONIS instead of ACRIS?

Yes! Sorry 'bout that...

The trend of naming devices and companies in a very generic way has me pulling my hair out!

Been there...
Have read lots of good things from Acronis too.

I use Backblaze for online backup, but for the specific question of external HD FreeFileSync is enough for my very basic requirements. But definitively Acronis would be one of the candidates I would look into if necessary.

Thanks everyone for your quick responces. I am looking at Acronis, I like all its capabilities including cloning and creating recovery media. I was looking on line and for non cloud purchase on line, I see prices ranging from $4.99 to $49.95. Anyone have any idea what the difference may be?

Very good and free: Microsoft SyncToy 2.1 (x64).

With it you can create batch processes like either backing up or mirroring a certain folder on both drives.

I use SyncBack - since 2003. Good stuff, free, unless you need advanced features, but the free one is pretty full featured. But I wouldn't stop using cloud backup, which is your redundancy, unless it's your plan to run multiple drives.

I have used Acronis True Image for both an external drive and cloud and it works great.

I am on the Acronis website and the pricing I see is "From $49.99" for the True Image 2019
