My question always comes down to is it more beneficial to crop the image or go 1.3? I've had good and bad results either way when enlarging. So I use both. I've set up one of my functions buttons along with the command wheel to do the change w/o having to look away when I need a little bit more reach. Like everything else, you have to play with it.

There is that assumption, again, that everyone does post processing...

Even some of us who do post processing would prefer to get the image framed properly in the camera. It was drilled into us in the three semesters of photography I took. Everything was printed full frame, and for finals the negative or chrome had to accompany the print.

I know some people like to leave the focus point and subject in the center and compose later. One reason I don't use BBF is because I rarely take my thumb off the joystick. I prefer putting the focus point on the subject, rather than putting the subject under the focus point. All those little birds I shoot jump around a lot just to mess with me.

Yeah, I said "would prefer". I did not say what the success rate is.

"...It really does nothing you can't do in post processing..." a rather naive statement from a user who has little concept of frame rate enhancement... I have/use the 1.2 crop on my D810 often... this yields more megapixels than a D500 is capable of... it also boost frame rate up (which is priceless for sports shooters).

I have programmed my movie record button (f13) to switch formats on the fly... nearly instantly with a little practice... there is another feature (a6) in AF point illumination to "gray out" the unused crop area such as with a "real" pro Nikon camera like my D3x... albeit at expense of AF point illumination (why did you cripple AF illumination on this feature with the D810 Nikon?).

Nope the use of 1.3x and 1.2x crop are powerful features that commercial shooters use all the time... seems like only the hobbyist find a problem with pixel count which absurd for having close to the same resolution as a Pro Nikon D4 with a D500 in 1.3x crop... and certainly more than a D3s or D3 (btw, many Sports Illustrated covers were shot with a D3s or D3)

I have never had a client ask me how many mega pixels I was using... never...

doclrb until you have experimented with this feature you will not get your head around what it can do for you... even then you may not be far enough along on your photographic journey to recognize what it brings to the table... all the best doclrb....

Thank you for this excellent explanation. It makes perfect sense and enlightens an option that I had not thought about using.
