I shoot mostly Wildlife (birds). I'm looking to step up to a nikon d-500 and a telephoto lens. My budget could fit a tamron 150-600 G2. The specs on the lens says full frame format. The d500 is a crop sensor and i'm wondering if I am making the right choice on this combo. Any help? Thanks

Its a great combo. Full frame lenses are always fully compatible with crop sensor bodies.

I use a crop (7200) with that lens and find it is up to the task. Many of my birder friends have the combo you are looking at. Enjoy!

Personally, I prefer the Nikon 200-500, but that is a personal choice, and the tamron or sigma are both fine lenses as well. Do not be concerned about the cropped frame body and full frame lens, they work very well together, I usually recommend full frame lenses when you purchase a lens, in case you ever upgrade to a full frame camera, all your lenses will work. As to price, check out KEH for used lenses at a slightly lower price. They usually warrant their used equipment, and they are very reliable as a resource for used equipment. B&H Photo sells used equipment as well. You will find that most used lenses are in great condition.

If you do your research you will find that the perfect pair for Wildlife is the D500 with Nikon 200-500.
I had a Sigma Sport 150-600 and sold it because I was not pleased with the sharpness at the upper focal lengths. My Nikon 200-500 is super sharp through the entire range. Welcome to the forum.

I have the Sigma 150~600mm lens, and use it with FF and crop Nikon cameras. Works well.

The advanced of the Nikon 200-500 I that you can use a 1.4 converter with it and get 280-700 at F8 still with some autofocus points . You will lose a very small bit of acuity but at least you will get the shot. The variable aperture of the Tamron means that a converter will take you beyond F8 and the camera's autofocus capability.

That combo will work fine for birding! Here's a shot I took recently with that combo( The older G1) and the G2 lens is supposed to be even better!

Nikon pairs their D500 for wildlife with the Nikon 200-500 5.6. They still offer it as a kit. So, consider the Nikon 200-500 5.6 that has been manufactured to work specifically with your Nikon. I have been using this lens for about three years and no dust in my lens yet, I use it every day, 7 days a week in Florida Wetlands. Below are a few grab shots taken with this lens mounted on the D500. I comes with a 5 year warranty, but lets face facts, if a lens is bad, it is bad out of the box, but you still have a 5 year warranty but remember you must register it on line with NikonUSA to get the 5 year warranty. Please, do yourself a favor and read about the reviews on this lens, it is as good as advertised. Below are some grab shots taken with this lens on the D500. Good luck and keep on shooting until the end. Adorama offers a 12 month no interest payment plan for qualified buyers. Check it out.

Good combo. Enjoy them both. If you get an FX body some day, you have a good lens for it.

That should serve you well. I love my D500 and it's great for birds and other wildlife. You will have a great time with it. I considered the 100-600, but i already had the first generation Tamron and wasn't pleased with it. So I was wary, plus I looked at all the reviews. When a friend loaned me his Nikkor 200-500, that made my decision easier. The Nikon lens is heavier, which might be considered a negative, but there is a reason for it. It's a better lens, more and better glass. I have been very pleased with my decision ever since. My considered advice - go with the Nikon 200-500. Billnikon is right, just look at his pictures.

The lens should be fine. You can't buy a DX lens with 600mm focal length any way.
