I have a Canon SX710HS I got to go to Disney World. Closed, it's the size of a pack of cigarettes. It has a 40x zoom, will focus as close as 1/2", 20 mp, and it's light. Get a small case with a belt loop. Comes in newer 720, 730, and 740 versions, $400 or less.

I strongly suggest a camera with a viewfinder. Th SX7XX series doesn't have one. The Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS70 does.

Howdy Howdy:
Yes, I would kind of like to have a view finder, optical or EV. I sat down the other day and looked through all the Canon offerings in the small, pocketable point N shoots, and found it to be quite a give and take between the GX, ELPH, and SX cameras as far as what they would do. The SX series will focus down to within 1/2" of the lens, will zoom an equivalant of 24 to 960mm, does decent in low light, and has a decent selection of Basic and Creative zones. I have seen several photos posted to the hog taken with this camera. Yes the live view screen is some times a pain in bright light, but I have gotten by. It all depends what the OP wants and deems necessary to their shooting needs.

Most post-moderns I know have been taking pictures without an EVF, and posting them on social media, for well over a decade. I wonder if a viewfinder is even important to them.

Absolutely! I have a friend who reverted back to a smart phone after complaining about a bridge camera without one. She has no knowledge of camera technology and wants simple, but the screen washout problem in bright daylight was a killer for her. Don't know how she deals with it on a cell phone.

Maybe it's "The Familiar". That entity seems to have huge power over the human mind.
