American White Pelicans in Goleta Slough

Capturing a lot of attention from the locals who don’t see them often. The larger horn on their bills is part of their breeding plumage and goes away after they’ve mated. This was a small flock, fishing in the afternoon light. These pelicans don’t dive for fish, but feed on fish caught while swimming versus our California brown pelicans who are fierce divers for food.

I have only seen them in captivity, never in the wild. Nice series.

They are kind of rare here, too. Much more common to see the brown pelicans.....they seem to be enjoying the brackish water of the slough.

So am I, PHV, but looking at the focus, lighting and feather detail shows that you are doing such things well in creating a very attractive image! Take care!
