A zoom lens which has a top focal length 3 times, or less, the bottom focal length produces sharper images than do lenses which have a top focal length which is more than 3 times that of the bottom focal length. A 24-70mm lens has a top focal length which is 2.92 (2.91666667) times the bottom focal length. It will produce sharper images than will a longer zoom....such as a 24-120mm lens...which has a top focal length which is 5 times the bottom focal length, or a 28-300mm lens....which has a top focal length which is 10.7 times the bottom focal length. The 24-70mm zoom lets you get nearly 3 times closure to your subject with just a twist of the wrist....without you having to move closer. Depending upon what you are shooting, that can be useful. Lenses with greater magnification....5 times, 10 times, etc, will get you closer-without moving-but will give you fuzzier images. a 24-70mm zoom, and a 70-200mm zoom, and a 200-500mm zoom, and doing some lens changing, will give you sharper images than will something like a Nikon 24-500 DL camera with it's 20.8 power lens. Nikon's AFS 24-70mm F/2.8 G ED lens is a pro grade item which will produce sharp images with both FX, and DX, (Full Frame, and Crop Frame) cameras. It costs a bit, but can be worth it, if you use it enough, and well enough.
