For any Hogger, who has ever been involved with technical rock or face climbing for photography research or personal challenges, a Must watch is: Free Solo--Alex Honnold's climb of El Capitan—National Geographic special. I watched it last evening. If you want to view a hard drinking, drugging, vulgar rambling, free-spirted, and partying team of climbers in Yosemite National Park, this is not your kind of video. However, if you want to explore the psychology, personal lives, physical demands, mental preparations, self-determination, and dedication of the best solo team in the world, you won’t be disappointed. To observe the photography equipment alone was a learning experience. Thankfully, Nat Geo did not risk the loss of intense continuity by interjecting commercials.

Watched it twice and loved it for the reasons you mentioned. The best way to climb this cliff is by watching this film and living vicariously.
I saw it in the movie theatre--excellent!
This was such a great movie and what a really nice young man. Interesting to find that he was socially dysfunctional and that his brain did not register fear in the "normal" range. An incredible climber.
It hasn't been mentioned that the film won the Best Feature Documentary Oscar this year. I avoided it at first, as I have a healthy fear of heights and don't generally enjoy watching free climbers risk their lives. But after it won the Oscar I sought it out in a theater. I reasoned that I know he didn't die, so it shouldn't be that bad. It was still very unnerving to see. Of course, the film crew didn't know he wasn't going to fall, and must have worried that they were going to film his death. But I have to say it was one of the greatest athletic accomplishment I have ever seen.
Stupid irresponsible movie. Watch "The Dawn Wall". Fantastic movie and climb!!!!

When I was younger and used to rock climb... we were not interested in these issues... we just did it and had fun.

Have followed Alex awhile. Wouldn’t want to be his mother.

I have climbed El Cap and other walls in Yosemite. The movie was well done and brought back many fond memories. However, I would not Solo it. 😬

Irresponsible? Why? Knuckleheads will emulate smaller boulder problems, not big walls.
Isn't the real story here about the filmmakers? They go there with a lot of equipment first.
You're right - The movie that featured your climbing skills was SO much better... Thanks...
