Shielings at Cuidhsiadar, Isle of Lewis

Shielings are traditionally shelters on the high and remote summer livestock grazing. Most of the old original shielings, constructed of stone with heather thatched roofs are now ruins. These are more of a weekend getaway where those that have the necessary common rights can spend a bit of "off grid" time while, perhaps, digging peat for their winter fuel.

A few simple ingredients expertly concocted with a pleasing outcome. The residents would have got used to drinking water that had an amber tint from the peat.

I drink it, but I do put it through one of those filters that "Removes 99.99999% of all bacteria, such as salmonella, cholera and E.coli; and 99.9999% of all protozoa, such as giardia and cryptosporidium" No point in taking any chances, I don't fancy the essence of rotted sheep in my drinking water

PS: Most of these places have a storage tank with a UV filter.

Hi, Graham,
I like the image...it’s composition and color are effective.
I can’t get out of my head that I’ve seen this scene...perhaps from a slightly different perspective, in a much more dour, darker mood in B&W..it was a very different effect, but fully as engaging in its own right.
I’m pretty sure I saw it here in UHH.

Hi, Dave, I have posted a picture or two of similar places but never this particular place. Maybe the one you remember is of one of the huts placed very centrally in a barren landscape?

Hi, Graham,
In the image I recall the shieling was set off to the right..as in this one, but I don’t think there was a burn in the image...but it was very dark and I might have missed it. I think there was a door an two windows, but ....
I’m sure you’re right...hike the hielands enough and one’s bound to encounter more than a few similar scenes.

I do so love such scenes and vistas as you and R.G. post. It has been far too many years since I’ve been able to once again get immersed in that land that you so love.

Best,
Dave

Graham, this is awesome. The colours are wonderful. What strikes me so is the balance. This is perhaps one of the best balanced images I've seen.
