Not just a lens shade I would think, but for making creative vignettes in camera. I would just use Photoshop.

I've accomplished the same thing shooting directly into the sun by using my left hand as additional shade beyond the lens hood. Did this shooting Little League baseball.

The thing which is of most interest is contrast, the matt box can extend quite a way out in front of the lens and stop light entering from the side. This is generally a good thing.
