Please recommend a resource on raw

Starting to shoot in raw and I would like a better understanding of raw PP. Been looking at Ben Long's book, Getting Started With Camera Raw. I have Elements 9 and Capture NX2. May buy Adobe Lightroom, but don't ever think I will have a need for Photoshop CS.

So would you recommend Ben Long's book, or is there a better resource? THanks!

Vick I - what are you looking for? Have never seen the book you are asking about. But, I also use CaptureNX2 and I have and use Ben Long's book - "Nikon Capture NX" and Nikon's "Capture NX 2 After Shoot" along with the user's manual. My point is that they tell me all I need to know about basic RAW PP. I'm a JPG shooter so I don't know much, if anything, about the enhancements that may be achieved with RAW that my not be possible with JPG' so I imagine that they will help with the enhancements albeit by use of my imagination rather than tricks-of-the trade reduced to writing .

The PHotoshop Elements 10 book for Digital Photographers (that's the title) by Scott Kelby and Matt L-something has a great section on shooting and editing in RAW. It takes you step by step through all the editing features and how to use them. I loved this book and learned a lot.

I do not know what your experience level is but I would highly recommend Bryan Peterson books, available on Amazon, as the basis for learning how to take good photos first before one tries to learn how to use photshop or NX2. I have NX2 and use it but the learning curve is high, just like any of the Adobe or Corel or Apple products. Take your time and progress slowly and success will come with time. Like the old musician said when asked how to get to Carnegie Hall, his response was "practice, practice, practice".

I often find it easier to watch rather than read about but the only problem is you do not have the reference material in front of you. There are loads of great Photoshop RAW tutorials on youtube and the likes. In fact there are tutorials on there for everything you can imagine. Some better than others.

I have found youtube to be a hit and miss proposition. Some videos are much better than others. I am a speed reader and like it that I can zero in on what I need to know in a print book, rather than sit through the ads and other distractions while waiting for the person on youtube to get to the point. All that said, is there a person on youtube that you would recommend as a good resource? Thanks for your input.

I subscribe to quite a few and generally get a feel for certain people on there. I am currently into watching PMCC150 subscriptions on youtube. Hes an old guy but knows his stuff. Not sure if he done any RAW stuff though.

You might want to investigate Adorama TV, it is a youtube site and it has many very helpful and interesting videos. No ads either.
