This is an exceptional photo for me. Yes, the expression on the little girl's face makes the image. It looks like you have been spotted and she is holding on to her mom's hand for security but for me, the most interesting part of the picture is the feet. Is there a leg in the floating shoe and if so where is the head that goes with it? Nothing is natural about the position of the feet. Probably the most likely explanation is that it is an abandoned shoe and mom either doesn't want to step on it or kick it aside but I don't know. Photos that make you question what is in the frame are always interesting.

I saw that extra shoe too. I figured out that it was another child who is tucked in the doorway out of sight and only his right shoe is showing.

Foot fetish is my nick name, at least now it is – oh dear, that will teach me. I think SpiderJan solved the mystery. I couldn't figure out why someone would abandon one shoe on the step and not the other one. Looking closer it is the same style shoe the small girl is wearing so maybe they are twinnies or at least they were bought at the same time. Thanks AZ Nikon.

Another possibility is a second girl in the alcove and behind the mother. I didn't pay any attention to it at the time.
