Outstate was no better, either. On both sides of the road (Excelsior Blvd) was a golf course. The street, the bridge, and the golf course are still there.

That looks like Boston's Blizzard of '78. Maybe a bit deeper, though. The local Interstates and state highways looked like this.

I clearly remember the '78 blizzard and to be honest, this Minneapolis storm of 1940 looks worse - just based on this old photo.

We went through "The Blizzard of 78" in Andover, MA. The worst part of the snowfall there was that we already had about 18" on the ground from a prior storm, but while it snowed I think I plowed my driveway about three times to keep ahead of it. I had a International Harvester garden tractor with a blade; it was still a workout!

The best thing was that the Gov. closed the roads for five days, but Andover's street crews had all our roads clear by the next morning so we could get downtown for groceries with out any trouble and the kids all had a ball, and the wood stove in the kitchen kept the house warm and got the kids dry after X-country skiing, snowball fights, snow-men, etc. and I had an unexpected vacation.

The day I came home from being born. The only thing running was the train and then only after a whole lot of shoveling!

I was living and working in Norwood for the Boston area's blizzard of '78. The roads were closed to cars, but they didn't say anything about bicycles so... As soon as my street was plowed (with a big Caterpillar bulldozer) I was bicycling out on Rt 1.

That's me digging my way out to my car

78 North Shore Long Island.... snow drift to the peak of the roof from the street, 16 feet deep, open every door, nothing but snow, we had to actually dig our way out. 3 days to clear a path 8 feet by 100' out to our street, 15 HP snowblower, many hours of hard labor, will never forget it. 2 days of rescues of motorists off L.I. Expressway, cars buried for days. We left to come to Florida that spring. I feel the pain!

We got almost 2 inches of snow about 10 years ago, but we managed to survive.
